As the only B2B Technology Agency Search Consultancy, we get asked this question constantly by Marketers, Vendors and even Agencies themselves.
For many years and across tons of B2B Tech Agency Reviews, we’ve sat on the front lines with our clients – dissecting Agency capabilities, RFP responses, case studies, pitches and pricing – over and over again.
We actually know each agency.
We know what they’re good at. We understand the services they offer and their core areas of expertise. We know their leadership and team. We know what budgets are appropriate for them. We know where they have offices, but where they actually operate for the specific service (this is often different). We know what brands they work with. We understand their fee structures. We are up to date about how they’re evolving – getting acquired, making acquisitions, changes in leadership, adding new capabilities, new wins, expanding into new regions.
We keep the ultimate pulse on the market and the ever-changing Agency landscape.
“Who are the BEST B2B Technology Agencies?”
We're uniquely positioned to answer this question. And with complete confidence, the answer is: there isn't one.
Sorry, we’re sure this is disappointing and maybe even a bit ego puncturing to our B2B Tech Agency friends. But, it is true.
Do awards make an agency the "best"?
No. We know there are tons of awards out there that even claim to name or rank order the “Best B2B Technology Agencies” for one thing or another. While good intentioned, many of those awards are misguided and a bit superficial.
Some are measuring “The Best” Agency by things like self-reported revenue increases, increases in team members, case studies and the like. While these are a great indicator of growth and insight into work, they are not a true measure of what makes the best B2B Technology Agency or a great agency. They’re often not even a real apples-to-apples comparison of agencies. Agencies will be on the same “best of” list that don’t do the same thing.
What makes an agency great?
There are a lot of agencies that offer similar Core Services (these are the things the Agency does really well and what they win new business for) – they can all build an eye-catching brand, make an impactful creative campaign, buy the same media, get coverage in the right new and traditional media, build an incredible website, etc. The subtle nuances of an agency is what differentiates one agency from another and truly makes them special.
These are things like the team, chemistry, strategic thinking, how they operate, how they answer questions, how they respond when things go wrong, communication styles, how quickly they do things, how the they treat each other at the agency, if they’re agile and adaptable, how they manage back-fills and team turn over, how they handle vacation coverage, how they share hard news, their ability to take accountability, how they leverage technology, how they help you showcase success... the list goes on and on.
There’s also a wide range of different types of B2B Tech Agencies based on services, size, global operating, budgets, audience expertise, experience with different sales motions and verticals, and the like. There are B2B Technology specialist Agencies, who exclusively (or nearly exclusively) work with B2B Tech brands. And, there’s an entire sub-set of Agencies who have exceptional B2B practices, but aren’t only a B2B Tech Agency. These are Agencies who have cross functional disciplines and have built-out top notch B2B practices. While they all may have similar core service offerings, they are actually quite different.
There’s also a growing wave of non-B2B Technology Agencies winning B2B Technology accounts mostly for Brand and Creative, as B2B Tech Brands continue to realize that your “B2B Tech Buyer” is also a human and you need to connect with them on a human-level. These primarily “consumer” Agencies are breathing new life, bringing new creativity and up-leveling Tech Brands in such fun, innovative and attention-grabbing ways.
How do you decipher one agency from another?
Depending on what you’re looking for in an Agency partner, what Agency is best for you, your team and your organization is likely wildly different than what is best for another person, team and marketing organization.
This is why selecting an Agency based on a recommendation from a friend or colleague is not the best idea. This is also why just re-hiring an Agency that you worked with in the past can also be tricky. The Agency might be significantly different than when you previously worked with them, and they might have been great for your previous organization – but are they right for you now? And, skip the LLMs for building your Agency Shortlist for an upcoming RFP – they have no clue about the reality of Agencies and cannot differentiate one Agency from another.
We’ve even had Agencies win an RFP through Tenx4 for one client and then had them in another Agency RFP soon-ish after the win (for a similar scope) and not even make it past the written round. This is actually great news for Agencies. You may not gel or be the right fit for one Marketing Team, but your next great client might be right around the corner. It is also a warning to our Marketing friends – your needs are not like anyone else’s.
Organizations are complex. Marketing Team needs are complex. The B2B Tech Agency landscape is complex.
One Marketing Team’s yuck is another team’s yum.
All of this and more is why it is impossible to name the “BEST” B2B Technology Agencies.
There is no “best” – only what’s right for you.
